Erchema lives with her sister Zhuoma Lacuo in a village in the Sichuan Mountains of China, shut off from the rest of the world. Her entire life is spent in this distant haven. However, Erchema will turn 13 next autumn and, according to local custom, will become a lady.

She is a member of the Na people, who live in a matriarchal society where women make all of the main decisions. Erchema has been chosen as the family's new leader. She'll have to drop out of school to help feed the family by working in the fields.

However, on the other side of the mountains, on the banks of Lake Lugu, her older sister Lamu has defied tradition and the desires of the family. She married and has a child with her husband, whom she is raising. Lamu will go to whatever length to overturn the clan's decision and ensure Erchema's schooling. Will Erchema dare to go against the grain and change her destiny? Her decision will determine the clan's survival...
