Carlotta Walls LaNier is the youngest of nine African-American students who were the first ever black students to attend Little Rock High Central High School in 1957. The group would become known as the "Little Rock Nine".
On the first day of school, the group would be met by an angry mob and kept out of the school by the Arkansas National Guard under orders from the Governor.
Eventually President Dwight D. Eisenhower was forced to deploy the 101st Airborne Division to Little Rock to personally escort Carlotta and her fellow students to class.
Carlotta went on to become the first black female student to graduate from Little Rock Central High School.
The AVC was honored to have Carlotta Walls LaNier join us this year at our 2021 American Valor Conference in Washington D.C. to speak to future generations of leaders.
