INCREDIBLE drone footage shows a new delta created in the sea by overflowing lava from La Palma's Cumbre Vieja volcano.

The confinement of 3000 people in the Spanish island of La Palma has been ordered due to poor air quality generated as molten rock poured into the sea.

The volcanic material cooled extending the island's surface by a total of 43 hectares since the eruption began on September 19.

Authorities on the Spanish island of La Palma ordered residents of three coastal towns to stay indoors on Monday after a new stream of lava crashed into the ocean, sending thick clouds of potentially toxic gases high into the sky.

Drone footage from the local council showed white clouds billowing out of the water as the red hot molten rock slid down a cliff into the Atlantic.

The airport, which was also closed due to the accumulation of ash, remained shut on Wednesday.
