Orcas attacking and killing dolphins! As a whale watcher in Southern California, you know that it’s technically possible to see killer whales any time of year, in any location. Those of us on the water daily will make offhand comments like hey, let’s go find the Orcas today, when we know deep down there’s less than a 1% chance of that happening on a standard whale watch. So as we cruised towards Catalina Island on a gloriously calm afternoon, and those tall unmistakable dorsal fins appeared on the horizon, we simply couldn’t believe it! It wasn’t until we were finally close enough to scream “ORCAS!!” that we let ourselves get lost in the amazing moment of discovering the whale watching holy grail sighting. We arrived right as this pod of Eastern Tropical Killer Whales was preparing to attack a large group of dolphins!
