Photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto leads us through the Hayward Gallery’s survey of five decades of his work.

Sugimoto, renowned for creating some of the most alluringly enigmatic photographs of our time, leads us through some of his notable series of work, his approach to photography, and the changing landscape of the medium over the 50 years he has been working.

The series the artist discusses in this interview are Seascapes, which he describes as framing the beginning of his life; Theaters, in which he expanded on the idea of condensing movies into a single illuminated frame and Opticks, his first and only series of colour photographs, which expand upon and earlier idea and approach by Isaac Newton.

Sugimoto also goes into detail on his methods, explaining how rather than look for things to photograph, his approach begins with a vision, or an idea upon a theme, and his photographs then serve as a means to confirm these ideas. He also considers how the invention and progression of digital photography has changed the perception of photography, with particular relevance to his own work.

The Hayward Gallery exhibition, Hiroshi Sugimoto, runs until 7 January. Book now: https://www.southbankcentre.co.uk/wha...
