One of the most anticipated cars of 2019, the AMG A45. News leaked out that for the first time a 'Hot Hatch' would be launched with over 400bhp in 2018. If so combined with the power to weight ration should make this car supercar fast. Although I believe the A45 has, as yet, not been tested on everyday roads, it is likely that this AMG will set the benchmark for years to come.

The new AMG A45 has a barnstormer of an engine. ‘We already set the benchmark in the segment with the preceding engine, this fundamentally new four-cylinder engine presented us with the challenge of doing even better. Not only is the output per litre unrivalled for a turbocharged engine, the high level of efficiency also demonstrates that the internal combustion engine still has further potential,’ said AMG chief Tobias Moers.

Power is up from 381bhp, (from 2015), to 415bhp, (and 369lb ft), for the A45 S version, and as far as I am aware making it the most powerful production four-cylinder engine on sale. The Base A45 has 382bhp (and 354lb ft). Going to make it seriously fast, even it's direct competitor, the 2019 Audi RS3, makes do with 394bhp though it does boast a 5 cylinder engine.

All AMG A35s and A45s offer four wheel drive via an eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox, giving a 0-62mph time of 3.9 seconds in the case of the A45S model and this is class leading and probably a conservative figure. Not that the regular A45 is far behind with 4.0sec to 62mph, which by the way is the same figure as quoted for Mercedes's dedicated supercar, the AMG GT Coupe.

Standard AMG A45s have four pistons front brakes, and on the S larger six-piston brakes are used. Adaptive dampers and adaptive exhaust are also standard and the new MMI interface, first shown on the Geneva announced AMG A35, includes the new MBUX infotainment system and has bespoke AMG displays with the Track Pace data logger application for recording lap times on different tracks.

The AMG 45S base price is 51K making is substantially more than hot-hatches like the Honda Civic Type R and Ford Focus RS, but then these cars do not have 415bhp in their arsenal. Many of the A45's specced will get close to the 60K mark with extras so worth budgeting around this level if you want one. The good news is that previous cars were discounted but it may take some time before these offers become available. Personally I would wait for the nearly new second hand cars to appear.
