Lifting the Trump era tariffs on EU steel and aluminum imports could lead to similar agreements with Japan and the UK, US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo says. Speaking November 1, 2021 at PIIE’s inaugural Next STEP Global Conference hosted with the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, Raimondo said China’s contributing to a global steel glut was the common “enemy” of US trading partners. To address supply chain bottlenecks, she called for expanding production among allies—“friend-shoring.”

Keynote remarks by US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo are followed by a discussion with Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Senior Minister, Singapore, moderated by PIIE President Adam S. Posen. The Next STEP Global Conference is an annual dialogue where leaders meet to address challenges to human well-being arising from economic instability, insecurity, and exclusion. The event is hosted by the Peterson Institute for International Economics (PIIE) and the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy (LKYSPP) at the National University of Singapore.
