Leah Warwick, 25, lives in Queens, NY and earns $70,000 a year as a social worker on Rikers Island. According to Leah, saving for her future is as important as spending money now. She's also interested in socially responsible investing, as well as learning more about investing and financial literacy.

This is the latest installment of Millennial Money, which profiles people across the U.S. and details how they earn and spend their money.

Leah Warwick tries to support companies and brands with missions and practices that account for the betterment of society, not simply profile. Warwick compares her interest in impact investing to choosing high quality ingredients when she bakes: “I love to cook, so I want to buy the best butter,” she says. “The best butter is going to produce a better cake. And so if I can give my money to a place that does better investing ... it creates a better world, a better environment, a better future.”

After graduating from NYU's school of social work in 2017, Leah worked at a family shelter in New York City before accepting her current job as a social worker on Rikers Island. Warwick is an advocate for incarcerated men living with infectious diseases like HIV and hepatitis C.

She has worked on Rikers for 1½ years and finds the job fulfilling. She wants to continue working there, hopefully one day in management.

When she was unemployed, Warwick earned extra income by taking surveys and being part of focus groups, which she still periodically participates in to supplement her income. She finds them by scouring Craigslist and calling local agencies, and she says there’s a certain skill involved to being selected to participate.
