It is important that all structural engineers understand these earthquake design concepts and how they affect their design, like how ductility affects the design and how to use it, how to diagram forces transfer around the structure and how to detail the connection to the lateral systems.

Also, new systems like the Rocking walls have also been introduced; these are a type of structural system that can be used to resist the forces of earthquakes. As the name suggests, rocking walls work by allowing the structure to move during an earthquake, preventing secondary effects from stiff flooring systems. This allows the structure to absorb the energy of the earthquake and reduce the amount of damage that occurs.

Rocking walls are typically made of concrete or masonry. The rocking motion is controlled by the use of shear connectors, post-tensioning and dissipators.
Rocking walls can be used to resist the forces of earthquakes in a variety of structures, including buildings, bridges, and other infrastructure. They are particularly effective in areas that are prone to earthquakes, such as California and Japan.
