Chinese outbound tourism is booming, but the Chinese tourist has gained a rather bad reputation, caused by various rather shameful news items appearing in the international press in recent years. But is this a reputation they deserve? What cultural differences lie behind posssible unpleasant behaviour?

As part of a workshop on Chinese tourists in December 2017 ChinaTalk's Ed Sander discussed the topic of the misbehaving Chinese tourists with the Belgian and Dutch participants. In his presentation he attempts to create more understanding, partially by examining our own behaviour. He also gave some suggestions on how businesses serving the Chinese tourists could handle difficult situations.
