What is Respiratory Failure? This video covers the medical definition and provides a brief overview of this topic.

➡️ Respiratory Failure Definition
Respiratory failure is a term characterized by the inability of normal oxygenation or removal of carbon dioxide. During a breathing cycle, the body takes in oxygen during inhalation while removing carbon dioxide during exhalation. This process is known as gas exchange. However, if not enough oxygen is taken into the body, or if not enough carbon dioxide is removed, this results in respiratory failure and can lead to serious medical conditions.

➡️ Types of Respiratory Failure
We mentioned that it is caused by either a lack of oxygen or by too much carbon dioxide. This means that there are two types:
1. Hypoxemic respiratory failure
2. Hypercapnic respiratory failure

➡️ Type 1 Respiratory Failure
Hypoxemic respiratory failure (type I) describes a lack of oxygenation where there is a PaO2 of less than 60 mmHg in arterial blood.

➡️ Type 2 Respiratory Failure
Hypercapnic respiratory failure (type 2) describes an acidotic state of which there is a PaCO2 greater than 50 mmHg in arterial blood.

So, with type I respiratory failure, it represents a lack of oxygen. For type II, it represents ventilatory failure due to the accumulation of too much CO2 in the body. Again, for this video, we just wanted to provide you with a brief overview of this topic. We'll be breaking it down into much more detail in a separate video.
