The first route of the Southern Railroad in Alabama was from Mobile to Selma in 1894. Southern Railroad was headquartered in Washington DC and was the souths largest railroad serving all states below "The Mason Dixon Line". Southern operated both passenger and freight service and by 1963 had 40 thousand freight cars and 587 passenger cars. It was eventually purchased by Norfolk Southern. Most all short-line railroads have been consolidated under big names. Thanks for being a part of the Southern Stories family by subscribing to this channel.
