Okay, this may be controversial, but the movie industry is all about who you know. Networking can be the key to advancing your career or producing your next movie, but are you making the right moves to maximize your connections?

(00:11):
Networking in the movie business can be overwhelming and intimidating in many ways, and a lot of people are unsure how to approach industry professionals or make meaningful connections, and this can lead to missed opportunities and a lack of career growth. Now, a common mistake people make is focusing like solely on their interests and needs, rather than building genuine relationships. I've seen many people push their way into a conversation and come across as creepy business card dispensers, which is what you do not want to do.

(00:38):
Instead, you've got to approach networking in the movie business with a focus on building genuine relationships. Plan to attend the American Film Market, perhaps the European Film Market and the Cannes Marche Du Film. And when you get there, you take time to get to know people and understand their goals and needs, and you could offer to help them however you can potentially synergize and they'll be more likely to do the same for you.

(00:57):
I want you to think about the difference between someone who just randomly hands out business cards, runs off, versus somebody who takes the time to converse and connect personally. Which person would you be more likely to remember and want to work with in the future? By building genuine relationships, you can create a network of industry professionals to help you grow your career, and you may find new opportunities, get valuable advice and guidance, and potentially make lifelong friends.

(01:20):
So, the next time you attend a networking event, you should focus on making a few meaningful connections rather than trying to collect as many business cards as possible, right? Take the time to have a genuine conversation and find common ground and not just about the pitch, right? Networking in the movie industry can be the key to advancing your career, but it's essential to approach it correctly by building genuine relationships and focusing on the needs of others you can create a strong network of industry professionals who can help you achieve your goals.
