The blue ringed octopus is a small cephalopod with a deadly bite. They get their name from the conspicuous blue rings that appear on their bodies, though these are only displayed when the octopus feels threatened. Range: along the coasts of Australia, Japan, Papua New Guinea, the Soloman Islands, the Philippines, Indonesia and Sri Lanka
Habitat: shallow waters, typically bottom dwellers
Size: up to 8in (20cm)
Diet: crustaceans and fish
Life Cycle: typically lives less than two years - adults die after mating
