Today, Huawei officially unveiled the highly anticipated HarmonyOS NEXT Hongmeng Milky Way Edition operating system. The launch of this new operating system signifies another solid step forward for Huawei in the path of independent research and development. The Hongmeng Milky Way Edition operating system adopts Huawei's self-developed kernel, completely abandoning traditional Linux kernels and open-source Android projects like AOSP code. It only supports Hongmeng kernel and Hongmeng system applications, meaning users will experience a cleaner and more efficient interface. Huawei's Consumer Business CEO, Richard Yu, mentioned that the Hongmeng kernel, as Huawei's self-developed core technology, has surpassed traditional operating system kernel designs. The launch of the Hongmeng Milky Way Edition not only showcases Huawei's profound strength but also indicates the future direction of operating system development.

The "Pure Harmony" system differs from the Android ecosystem in that it cannot install or run Android apps. Instead, it uses its proprietary HAP format, also understood as Hongmeng native applications. Huawei officials point out that the biggest advantage of Hongmeng native applications lies in their smoother, more intelligent, and secure performance. Huawei HarmonyOS and Android differ in four key aspects.

1. Openness and Closedness: Android is renowned for its openness, allowing developers to freely customize and modify the system. This openness results in a rich variety of applications and personalized settings. In contrast, HarmonyOS is relatively more closed in terms of openness, with Huawei having greater control over the system. This means that while HarmonyOS may have a relatively smaller application ecosystem, it can offer better system stability and security.

2. Device Adaptability: Android has good adaptability across various devices, whether smartphones, tablets, or smart TVs, all of which can run Android. HarmonyOS, on the other hand, focuses on the Internet of Things (IoT) devices, aiming to achieve seamless connectivity and collaboration between devices. Therefore, HarmonyOS has more significant potential and advantages in the IoT field.
