The Abarth 500e is billed as the first proper electric hot hatch, but is that a formula that even works? In this CarGurus UK review, Vicky Parrott puts the latest Abarth model to the test, to see if EV power can equal a fun driving experience.

Powered by a 42kWh lithium-ion battery, the 500e gets a 164-mile range on the WLTP test cycle, while its 152bhp electric motor allows for a 0-62mph sprint of 7 seconds. In terms of acceleration, that might sound more warm than hot, but as Vicky discovers, the little Abarth is still an entertaining car to drive thanks to its sharp steering and grippy front end.

The synthesised ‘Abarth Sound Generator’ meanwhile adds a rumble in place of the petrol model's exhaust in an attempt to capture some of the soul of a classic hot hatch.
