Most of the statues displayed in the #USCapitol today are part of the National Statuary Hall Collection, where each state can provide up to two marble or bronze statues of distinguished deceased individuals associated with state history.

The old Hall of the House, now known as National Statuary Hall, was the first location designated for display of the Collection. These statues are now also placed in other areas of the U.S. Capitol and the Capitol Visitor Center.

The Architect of the Capitol (AOC) is responsible for the care and preservation of the artwork in the U.S. Capitol, but our role also extends to the process before pieces even enter the building. The AOC Curator Division is involved in the evaluation and advising on new statues and busts, and also in when a state decides to replace a statue in this Collection.
