What is the Role of the Substation in Electrical Power System ?
Substation Main Functions
Why do We Need Electrical Power Substations ?
The electrical power system is composed of generation, transmission, and distribution systems. The generating stations generate or produce electrical power. The transmission system transmits or send this produced electricity to overlong distances until it reaches to the customer load centers. Then the distribution system distributes or supplies the power to individual customer.

The role of the power system is to supply high quality power to the customer in safe and secure manner with high reliability. The substations ensure that this duty is performed well. Let's discuss further how could substation can perform safe and secure supply of power to the customer.

The major tasks a substation are threefold.
1.First task of a substation is the Voltage transformations between generation, transmission and distribution systems as the voltage level are different at generation, transmission and distribution systems. ( Title voltage transformation)
2. The second task is to accommodate measurement and protection systems, like CT,CVT,PT surge arrester, circuit breaker, etc. ( Measurement and protection)
3. The third task is To accommodate power system.control equipment like phase shifting transformers, power factor correction equipment, series or shunt compensation or other FACTS equipment. (Power systems control).
