Have you ever seen a baby and immediately changed the tone of your voice or the way you say a sentence? Believe it or not, that’s not baby talk. It’s actually parentese — a specific style of speech featuring audible characteristics like exaggerated vowel sounds, repetition, and is usually very high-pitched. And it builds babies’ brains for language and learning!

Your little one learns from listening to those around them so be intentional about talking to them early and often.

Here’s an example:
*When speaking adult to adult you would say: “It’s a gorgeous day outside. The sky is blue and the sun is shining.”
*Translate that into parentese in a sing-song voice and it would sound something like: “Ohhhhh do you see the sky? It’s sooooo blue! Oh and look at the sun! It’s bright and shiny and sooooo warm!”

The one-on-one conversations you have with your baby are so important for building their little brains and make a big difference for babies with hearing loss. Watch this video to learn how parentese works and ways you can use it each and every day!
