Amareah Bead didn't come from a large high school, and she wanted a change in college. The vastness of Purdue in West Lafayette fit perfectly, as Bead felt like campus was "alive."

And yet, Purdue may have offered a bit of a surprise, too, in how intimate it proved to be despite its size.

Bead quickly got involved with the Purdue Engineering Student Foundation (PSEF) and Purdue's chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers. She was named a Kiewit Scholar and Dean's Leadership Scholar.

And each of those groups helped her feel like home wasn't a nine-hour car ride away.

"What set Purdue Engineering apart, to me, was the feeling that everyone here wants you to succeed," said Bead, a sophomore in #civilengineering from Davidsonville, Maryland. "From being able to turn to my classmates when I need help, to the seemingly endless resources available for academics or personal well-being, there truly seems to be someone rooting for you from every corner of campus.”

Bead shares that enthusiasm with prospective students, as she gives tours through PSEF and the Office of Future Engineers. She tells students that #PurdueEngineering is like a “Choose Your Own Adventure” book, with so many options to explore and resources to help students thrive.

She wants to continue to do that in her own college career, talking a cue from parents – a doctor and a lawyer/author – who modeled persistent pursuit of goals.

“My parents are two of the most hardworking people I know, and they used education as a launching point to get to where they are today,” she said. “I am who I am because of their sacrifice and determination, so making them proud is the biggest motivator in the world.”
