The fourth vehicle to join our new cohort of long-term test vehicles is a 2022 Mazda 3 G25 Evolve SP hatchback automatic — a new trim grade for this year that gives the Mazda a sportier aesthetic without breaking the bank. It’s priced at $32K before on-roads and $1000 less if you want a six-speed manual.

But is the Mazda 3 too small to live with as a hatch? Or is this car still a great all-rounder? Chasing Cars deputy editor Nathan Ponchard is finding out over 10,000km.

Our Mazda 3 is finished in Polymetal Grey over black cloth inside.

The Mazda has a 2.5-litre petrol four-cylinder engine making 139kW (186 hp) and 252Nm of torque (185 lb ft). It competes with the Volkswagen Golf, Toyota Corolla, Hyundai i30, Kia Cerato and others.

What do you want us to test on your behalf in the Mazda 3 hatch? We’ll act as many of your requests as we can.
