When will Princess Anne bestow the title of Princess Royal upon Princess Charlotte?

When will the radiant Princess Charlotte be bestowed with the illustrious title of Princess Royal, previously held by her esteemed aunt, Princess Anne?

Imagine the weight on young Charlotte's shoulders as she learns to spell her own name in school, burdened with the knowledge of her numerous royal titles.

As the third in line to the throne, following the passing of her beloved grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, and the ascension of her grandfather, King Charles III, Princess Charlotte finds herself amidst a whirlwind of regal responsibilities at such a tender age.

Not only have her parents, the elegant Kate Middleton and the dashing Prince William, been honored with the titles of Prince and Princess of Wales, reminiscent of the late Princess Diana, but now the possibility arises for Princess Charlotte to inherit yet another prestigious title: the Duchess of Edinburgh.

Should she be granted this title, she would follow in the footsteps of her great-grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, who once held this esteemed position. Known as 'Her Royal Highness The Princess Elizabeth, Duchess of Edinburgh,' this title was bestowed upon the Queen after her enchanting union with Prince Philip at the grand Westminster Abbey, until her glorious ascension to the throne on June 2, 1953.

With her striking resemblance to her great-grandmother, Princess Charlotte stands as the first and youngest female in line for the throne, surpassing even her younger brother, Prince Louis. This shift in tradition was made possible by the amendments to the Succession to the Crown Act, prior to the birth of Prince George in 2013, which revolutionized the laws of succession (more on this later).

The burning question remains: will Princess Charlotte be honored with the former title of Duchess of Edinburgh, once held by Queen Elizabeth II?

In the enchanting month of November 2022, whispers reached our ears that King Charles III, who ascended the throne following his mother's passing, might choose to bestow the illustrious title upon Princess Charlotte, rather than granting it to Prince Edward, the Earl of Wessex, thus making him the Duke of Edinburgh, His Majesty.

But what do these changes to the Succession to the Crown Act mean for Princess Charlotte's future as the Queen?

In 2013, the Succession to the Crown Act underwent a transformation, allowing the firstborn daughter of Prince William and Middleton to supersede any younger brothers in the line of succession. This groundbreaking amendment paves the way for Princess Charlotte to potentially ascend the throne, marking a new era in the royal lineage.

When Prince William takes his place on the royal throne, it is anticipated that Princess Charlotte will be bestowed with a brand-new title, adding to her regal repertoire. As the second in line to the throne, the Prince of Wales, also known as the Duke of Cambridge, will pass on this prestigious honor to his beloved daughter. The title in question is none other than the illustrious Princess Royal, a designation traditionally reserved for the eldest daughter of the reigning Sovereign. If Princess Charlotte were to receive this esteemed title, she would become the eighth Princess Royal in the annals of British royal history. Currently, this honorable position is held by Princess Anne, the sole daughter of the late Queen, who was granted the title in the year 1987.

However, the conferral of the Princess Royal title is not a matter to be taken lightly. According to royal protocol, once the title is bestowed upon an individual, it remains with them for life, even if they outlive the Monarch. This means that two individuals cannot simultaneously hold the title. A prime example of this is Queen Elizabeth II herself, who, despite being the eldest of two daughters, did not receive the title Princess Royal during her father George VI's reign. This was due to the fact that her aunt, Princess Mary, the sixth Princess Royal, was still alive at the time.

For Princess Charlotte to be eligible for the title, two conditions must be met. Firstly, her father must ascend to the throne, becoming the King. Secondly, Princess Anne, the current Princess Royal, must pass away. Only then will the title be available for Princess Charlotte to inherit. This delicate situation was explained by a royal historian in 2018, who also mentioned that due to changes in the Succession to the Crown Act, Princess Charlotte may be granted a hereditary title, similar to her mother, the Duchess of Cambridge. In fact, it was suggested that Princess Charlotte may even be named a Duchess on her wedding day, following in the footsteps of her future brother-in-law, Prince Louis.
