Bridget “Biddy” Mason was brought as a slave to California. When she learned of her legal rights, she sued for freedom for herself and her family and won, in what became a landmark court case.

"From Enslaved to Entrepreneur: The Biddy Mason Story" is adapted from "Biddy Mason Speaks Up", an installment of the Fighting for Justice book series, written by Arisa White and Laura Atkins, illustrations by Laura Freeman.

This video is part of a larger project entitled "Gold Chains: The Hidden History of Slavery in California" (goldchainsca.org). This unique project lifts up the voices of courageous African American and Native American individuals who challenged their brutal treatment and demanded their civil rights.
