Are salt deposits a solution for nuclear waste disposal?

All over the world, there are swimming pools of water crammed with nuclear waste ready for his or her closing resting place. That is waste that was created from many years of nuclear energy technology, and the waste have to be dealt with fastidiously.

In the USA, scientists are learning a number of options for disposing of those wastes. Phil Stauffer and researchers at Los Alamos Nationwide Labs have been working with the US Division of Power and different nationwide laboratories on one long-term, secure, disposal answer: salt.

“Deep salt formations that exist already in the USA are one candidate for long-term disposal,” says Stauffer. “This ‘high-level’ nuclear waste can create plenty of warmth, along with the radioactivity that have to be contained. We have to develop a transparent path to get rid of this waste.”
