Talking about gender topics has never been easy. It is an intricate issue per se, it implies several biological and cultural aspects and it can be surrounded by ideological preconceptions. Talking about the case of intersex is challenging also because of the word itself, which is virtually unknown by the vast majority of the public.

ILGA Europe, an umbrella Ngo of Lgbti organisation, an Lgbti umbrella organisation, asked us to create a campaign video to rise awareness about the potential human rights violations than can occur to intersex children.

Preproduction challenges:

We came up with a script that in our eyes was delicate, poetic and clear enough. But what about in everyone else’s eyes? To find an answer to this we involved Fifth Beat, a research and design studio that created a focus group with people from a wide range of social and cultural backgrounds. After some adjustments based on those newfound insights, we were ready to animate.

How did we get there:

It came natural to us to opt for traditional animation techniques as they would have allowed us to give a more authentic feel to the characters and ensure a thoughtful touch to the production. And yes, despite all the odds, you can bet on a story with a happy ending.
