Sky Railway, formerly the Santa Fe Southern Railway, runs entertainment themed excursions from Santa Fe, New Mexico, toward Lamy. The railroad has two locomotives, SFSR 07, a GP-7u, and SFSR 93, a GP16 built in 1952. On April 13, 2024, both engines were in Santa Fe and 07 needed to be moved to Lamy for maintenance.
Instead of running it as light power, it was decided to run both engines on the regular Saturday afternoon train as far as MP 2 where 07 would be uncoupled and run light to Lamy while 93 shoved the excursion train back to Santa Fe.
We arrived in Santa Fe as the train was being assembled and watched it pass the famous Santa Fe Railyards water tower and head out of town. We caught it again moving through the beautiful landscape south of Santa Fe before stopping at the Galisteo overlook at MP 2. At the crossing of 285, just outside Lamy, we caught 07 making its way down the grade toward the village of Lamy.
