Slow Pitching Jigging vs Soft Plastic Lures

Welcome back to Southys Fishing, in this video myself and Sam compare the fishing methods of Slow Pitching Jigging and fishing with Soft Plastics. There are lots of different ways to fish for bass and one of the most popular ways is using a spinning rod or a ‘lure’ rod and casting a lure. This could be a hard plastic shallow diving lure, a top water lure or the most common variety called a ‘Soft plastic’ lure.

The soft plastic lures are a great way to fish for bass as they can work through the whole water column, for example if you cast the lure over a reef you can allow it to reach the bottom and once it does you can slowly retrieve the lure back up, doing so you cover all of the depths. If you were using a Topwater as the name suggests, you only cover the top of the water. This is the main reason why soft plastics are such a popular choice for people who are lure fishing!

However… slow pitch jigging is extremely popular when fishing abroad in place such as Florida, Maldives, Bahamas, Panama and much more. It’s also becoming the ‘go to’ topic/method to talk about and use in the UK as people are constantly trying new ways to catch fish.

People are starting to realise that Slow Pitch Jigging does in fact work really well if you use it in the right situation and as I just bought a new Slow Pitching Jigging (SPJ) setup I thought why not show the difference between fishing with Slow Pitch Jigs and Soft Plastic lures.

My personal opinion is I feel soft plastics are a better method in the areas I fish in Sussex, just because its a very shallow area, I generally don’t fish over 130ft of water, but I do think fishing with Slow Pitch Jigs is more fun as you are using a lighter setup and a ‘bait caster’ / ‘multiplier’ type reel. This means you can feel everything when you drop the jig down to the bottom, not something you can do very easily with a fixed spool reel.
