Skoda Kodiaq Review: The Insanely Practical Family SUV

If hauling kids and cargo is your top priority, the Skoda Kodiaq deserves a long look. This three-row SUV from the Czech brand packs immense practicality and versatility into an affordable, well-built package.

At the Heart of It
The Kodiaq's cabin may not be the last word in luxury, but it's spacious, functional, and built to withstand family life. Cloth upholstery is standard, but synthetic leather and real hides are available on upper trims. While plastic abounds, the materials are hardy. Simple controls and physical buttons make operation a breeze.

Where the Kodiaq truly shines is utility. Even the five-seat model boasts 36.8 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row. Fold that row down and you're treated to a gargantuan 97.9 cubes – enough to make a Chevy Suburban envious. Seven-seat models sacrifice some room but still offer a useful 32.6 cubic feet behind the third row.

Cleverly, the third row folds flat into the floor, avoiding the need to remove heavy seats. The second-row bench splits 60/40 and slides fore and aft. With the way-back chairs folded, you're left with a flat, low load floor. Need to haul something incredibly long? The front passenger seat also folds flat.

Space is generous in the first two rows, but as expected, the third row is quite cramped for adults. Thoughtful touches like an umbrella bin in the door and a built-in ice scraper add whimsy rarely seen in this segment.

Under The Hood
Powertrain options won't overwhelm, but they're sufficient for typical family use. Most buyers will opt for the 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder gas engine, producing a decent 150 horsepower. A 190-hp 2.0-liter turbo offers a bit more verve.

Those seeking maximum thrift can choose the 2.0-liter turbodiesel four with 197 hp. Unfortunately, the Kodiaq doesn't come with a hybrid powertrain, putting it behind rivals like the Ford Explorer and Hyundai Palisade in that regard.

Front-wheel drive is standard, with all-wheel drive optional across the line. Most models use a smooth-shifting eight-speed automatic transmission, with a six-speed manual available on lower trims.

The Drive
On the road, the Kodiaq rides firmly but comfortably. While handling is far from sporting, body motions are well controlled. The steering is light but precise, making the big Skoda easy to maneuver in tight quarters.

The turbo engines provide sufficient thrust for merging and passing, though the gas units can sound gritty when pushed. Those seeking maximum thrust should seek out the 245-hp Kodiaq vRS performance model.

Despite its family-focused mission, the Kodiaq offers reasonable towing capacity. When properly equipped, gasoline models can tow up to 4,409 pounds.

The Stoic Choice
Without the flash of more expensive premium alternatives, the Kodiaq makes a compelling case as an eminently sensible family shuttle. Its interior is robustly constructed yet clever, with endless storage cubbies and useful amenities abounding.

On the open road, the Skoda delivers a comfortable, refined experience. Factor in its strong value equation and you've got one of the most well-rounded three-row SUVs on the market today. If Volvo built a minivan, it would be the Skoda Kodiaq.
