The new 2021 Skoda Enyaq iV is an EV SUV that rivals VW's ID.4, Ford's Mach-e and the forthcoming Audi Q4 E-Tron, Nissan Ariya and Hyundai Ioniq 5. Jonny Smith reviews what could be the best EV family SUV yet, with up to 333-miles range and interior space like few others. Is it better than its VW brother? Well, Skoda seems to be getting a bit too good these days. Like Lidl and Aldi, they are almost the acceptable badge of honour for the middle classes.

Thanks for stopping by The Late Brake Show.

The Enyaq iV, then, is a rebodied VW ID.4. It uses the same MEB platform and has two battery sizes to choose from:

62kWh (58kWh usable) called Enyaq 60 = WLTP 256 miles
77kWh (82kWh usable) called the Enyaq 80 = WLTP 333 miles

While every 62kWh battery version of the Enyaq iV starts from £31,500 so qualifies for the £2,500 government plug-in car grant, 82kWh battery pushes the Skoda beyond the grant’s threshold of £35k (£39k), resulting in a jump in price of around £7,000. Sportline from £43k. Just don't be tempted by the latter.

True rivals for comparable size are: ID.4, Audi Q4 E-tron (as same platform), Ford Mach-e and forthcoming Hyundai Ioniq 5, Nissan Ariya and (in UK at least) Tesla Y.

CHARGING
60 model =
Rapid charge 55 mins @ 50kW or 35 mins @ 100kW to 80%
Wallbox 9hr 30 to 100%

80 model =
Rapid charge 1hr 10 min @50kW or 38 mins @ 125kW to 80%
Wallbox 13 hrs to 100%

DIMENSIONS (versus rivals)
65mm longer than ID.4.
4mm higher than ID.4
27mm wider than ID4
Shorter than Mach-e, Ariya and Ioniq 5.

Enyaq 4649mm long, 1879mm, 1616mm high, 2765mm wheelbase
ID.4 4584mm long 1852mm wide 1612mm high 2766mm wheelbase
Nissan Ariya 4595mm long 1850mm wide 1660mm high 2775mm wheelbase
Mustang Mach-e 4714mm length 1882mm width 1625mm height 2984mm wheelbase
Ioniq 5 4635mm long, 1890mm wide, 1605mm high, 3000m wheelbase

BOOT SPACE (versus rivals)
585L boot
Boot space VW ID.4 = 543L
Ford Mach-E = 402L + 81L (froot)
Nissan Ariya = 468L (2wd model)
Ioniq 5 RWD = 531L + 57L (froot)

POWER AND PERFORMANCE
The Enyaq iV 60 (58kWh) = 177bhp electric motor, 0-62mph in 8.7 seconds, top speed is 99mph.

Enyaq iV 80 (77kWh) = power upped to 201bhp, 0-62 8.5 seconds, while its top speed is identical.

As tested from £40,660 but with options this exact 82kWh Suite edition is nearly £54k. Yikes.

More performance will come in iV 80X version, which will have twin motors for 4wd and 306bhp / 460nm. Still slower than Ioniq 5 and nowhere close to Tesla Model Y or the Ford Mustang Mach-E.
