FDNY has 3 Decontamination Shower Apparatus they all use 2006 Mack MR Cabs with Ferrara Bodies. 4, 160 & 251. Decon Shower Apparatus are special called whenever a Incident Commander deems its response is necessary based on the circumstances of the emergency. The IC shall consult with the Hazmat, Rescue or Safety Battalion to determine if its response is required.

DSAs are intended to be used for technical decontamination. This includes the removal of:

Nuisance contaminants such as construction dusts and polluted water (black water diving)

Contaminants that are not immediately life threatening such as asbestos, PCBs, and biological contaminants (anthrax, bloodborne and airborne pathogens)

Contaminants that have potentially exposed patients where the patients are not displaying extreme signs or symptoms. These patients may or may not have been exposed but medical transport can be delayed until technical decontamination procedure is performed.

A Hazardous Materials Tech Unit (HMTU) must be present to ensure proper precautions are taken such as hazard assessment, isolation zones, and PPE used.

In derobeing area they will be given a personal belongings bag.

The Decon Shower units have stabilizers to make the rig flat as possible.
