You can do SO MUCH with a thinner, clean tone, maybe a bit of chorus, and a lot of syncopation. These parts are very effective at adding energy and interest while not screaming for attention in the mix. Most of this style of playing comes from funk music. The energy that comes off a clean syncopated guitar part always does it for me. This song I'm working on here is called "Right Time". It's a mid-tempo, in-the-pocket R&B track that I produced for artist Kip Fox's most recent record. It's also the title track. My headspace for this guitar part comes from what I've learned over the years from Paul Jackson Jr, Avi Bortnick (check out John Scofield's Überjam record if you're not familiar), and most recently Cory Wong. (Take a deep dive into the Vulfpeck channel if you haven't!) The thinner and cleaner the tone (think Strat pickup position 2 or 4), the more classic and effective it can be. It definitely punches above its weight!
