Biggest Asteroid will Hit Earth Warns Elon Musk. The "God of Chaos" Asteroid That Might Hit Earth. Asteroid close to Earth. Asteroid hitting Earth 2029. Can We Really Defend Ourselves From An Asteroid Armageddon? Asteroid almost hit us. Asteroid Almost Hits Earth Nobody Noticed! NASA's Plan to Save Us From Asteroid Bennu!. Asteroids are space rocks of varying sizes that orbit the Sun found in the #Asteroid Belt between Mars and Jupiter that are remnants of an older period of cosmos.

Many of these space rocks have ‘gravitated’ (pun intended) towards Earth lately and it is actually not a rare phenomenon. Many asteroids along their everlasting trip around the Sun tend to cross paths with orbits of planets that orbit the Sun in arranged elliptical orbits.

A collision by one of these asteroids has been speculated by scientists on numerous occasions describing the massive devastation their theoretical impact would cause. Stephen Hawking in his book ‘Brief Answers to the Big Questions’ talked about an asteroid collision being a threat to Earth. More recently Neil DeGrasse Tyson talked about the devastating tsunami that will be caused by asteroid 99942 Apophis. But are these are just theories? Or do they really point towards the major danger that asteroids carry with them?

Talking about the #Apophis ‘God of chaos’ story, Oxford scientist, Lewis Dartnell told Mashable India that, "Asteroid Apophis is one of the asteroids that we are tracking and we know that it is not going to impact for the next few decades and will continue on the trail”. He also explained that astronomers are actively looking for asteroids that might pose a threat but until now no such asteroid posing grave danger has been found.

However, when it comes to the overall danger surrounding asteroid collision on Earth, Neil De Grasse stated in a tweet that "society’s refusal to heed the warnings of scientists" is the real threat.

This is why preparing defences against an asteroid impact event is of paramount importance. B612 Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to planetary science and defence has explained that its 100 per cent certain Earth will be hit by an asteroid, but it is not 100 per cent certain when it will hit. During the Apophis debacle, Elon Musk had also tweeted his concerns over the lack of asteroid defences we have at the moment.

However, it doesn't really seem like the case since NASA seems to have some defences up its sleeve against asteroids. Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) is an undertaking by NASA for planetary defence which consists of a space probe that will use kinetic impactor technique to change the trajectory of an asteroid. NASA has already selected the target for the probes demonstration which is a binary asteroid called Didymos, with a 780 meters wide primary body and 160 meters wide secondary body. The size of the asteroid is similar to a potentially hazardous asteroid that could pose a threat to Earth. In June 2018, the US National Science and Technology Council admitted to being unprepared for an impact event and released the National Near-Earth Object Preparedness Strategy Action Plan.

#ElonMusk Twitter:

Great name! Wouldn’t worry about this particular one, but a big rock will hit Earth eventually & we currently have no defence.

Overall, it appears that there are advances being made in the field of ‘Planetary Defence Against Asteroids’ and we might even be ready to face a cataclysmic asteroid impact. But, even if we are not, we could always count on a rag-tag team of diggers that work under Bruce Willis and a couple of astronauts to save us from ‘Armageddon’. 99942 Apophis Asteroid Collisions 2019.
