Retargeted advertising has been a fundamental element of the online browsing experience — for better and worse — for the better part of the past two decades. But its legacy incarnation is on the way out, with roughly a year to go until Google officially disables third-party cookies in its Chrome web browser.

But retargeted advertising isn’t going away entirely. In lieu of cookie-based retargeting, Google’s Privacy Sandbox provides a new method for retargeting that aims to confine information about the products a person peruses online to the web browser, as Digiday senior media editor Tim Peterson covers in this video.
