In a significant step for hydrogen fuel cell technology's commercial use, GM and Honda have commenced operations at their joint venture facility, FCSM. This marks the first major collaboration in large-scale fuel cell production.

Established in Brownstown, Michigan, in early 2017 with a joint investment of $85 million, FCSM occupies a 70,000-square-foot area and has generated 80 new jobs. The facility focuses on producing high-quality hydrogen power solutions, which will be integrated into various products and business initiatives by both companies.

The engineering teams from Honda and GM began their cooperative development of an advanced fuel cell system in 2013. Their joint efforts have not only enhanced the system's performance but also doubled its durability compared to the 2019 Honda Clarity Fuel Cell. This was achieved by using materials resistant to corrosion and improving the system's performance in colder temperatures.

A key goal for both companies was to reduce development and manufacturing costs. This was pursued by capitalizing on large-scale production benefits, refining cell design, streamlining auxiliary equipment, employing common suppliers, and minimizing the use of expensive precious metals. As a result of these initiatives, the cost of producing the new fuel cell systems is projected to be one-third lower than that of the system used in the 2019 Honda Clarity Fuel Cell.

At FCSM, there has been a strong emphasis on quality and manufacturing efficiency. The venture has introduced several innovative methods for automating the production of membrane-electrode assemblies and fuel cell stacks.

The collaboration brings together the engineering prowess and intellectual property of GM and Honda. This integration aims to develop cost-effective hydrogen fuel cell systems suitable for a range of emission-free energy and transportation solutions.

Both GM and Honda envision a significant role for hydrogen and fuel cell technologies in achieving diverse zero-emission energy and mobility objectives. Each company has outlined their individual strategies for hydrogen technology development.
