In 1988 Akira, an animated adaption of the Japanese manga of the same name, was unleashed in theaters.

A few years later Katsuhiro Otomo's masterpiece of cyberpunk cinema was released in the US and went a long way towards showing a lot of Americans that cartoons didn't have to be just for kids.
