Best Things To Do On Alaska Land Tour | Matanuska Glacier Hike

One of the best things to do on an Alaska Land Tour is to take a hike on the Matanuska Glacier. It is the largest glacier, accessible by car, in the United States, and with Matanuska Glacier being only 2 hours from Anchorage, it makes for a great day trip from Alaska's largest city. And if you are planning a day trip, we also included some things to see, do, and eat on the way to or from Matanuska Glacier.

It's one thing to hike TO a glacier (like we did at Exit Glacier in Kenai Fjords National Park), but it's quite another thing to hike ON a glacier. There is just something so unique about walking through the silt, rock, and debris, to get to a field of ice that has so many different shades of incredible blue hue. The crunching of the ice during summer time was pretty interesting, too. We hiked the Matanuska Glacier in July of 2019, and although the surrounding scenery was veiled by wildfire smoke, we still had a great time exploring.
