Threaded inserts for wood are a game-changer! You can create durable wood jigs, fixtures, and furniture that are adjustable, using common bolt and thread sizes. Inserts come in both imperial and metric sizes, so you can work with whatever sizing of bolts/threading you have available to you.

DirtFarmer Jay uses “knife-edge” E-Z LOK® brass threaded inserts for his projects, whether it be a jig or fixture, shop-made tools (check out his large sanding blocks at:

   • DIY Custom Sanding Blocks!

where threaded inserts are used for the adjuster), or for knock-down or adjustable furniture.

The inserts have a slot on their top edge that will tempt you to use a standard screwdriver to install them. DON’T DO IT. You’ll be disappointed and the insert will end up being marred (the surface of the wood could be damaged too). Those slots are actually designed for the proprietary insert tool.

Watch this episode to learn 3 great ways to accurately and beautifully install threaded inserts - one using a drill press, one using a threaded insert install tool, and one using the simple Woodsmith® shop-made jig created by Phil Huber of the WoodSmith Show Team.

Here are some helpful links. Depending on the size of the insert you buy, you’ll need to drill the proper-sized hole to install the insert properly. Here is E-Z Lok’s spec sheet that shows you what drill sizes to use for each insert:

With what you’ve learned, you’re now able to make use of threaded inserts for your future projects and install them professionally. Now, YOU are the professional and you can JUST DO IT YOURSELF.
