Introduction
Surah Yusuf was revealed all at once unlike other surahs and is unique in this way. Unlike other prophets mentioned in the Quran, prophet Yusuf's story is only mentioned in this specific surah. Usually, the surahs in the Quran hold several themes in one passage, but Surah Yusuf holds one central theme. It focuses on the main timeline, and is a continuous story, put together in chronological order. With text covering fifteen pages, this story is a distinct excerpt from the Quran, and holds many valuable themes and lessons.
The Story of Yusuf: Yusuf was one of the sons of Ya'qub (known as Jacob in the English translation) who had the talent of interpreting dreams. One day Yusuf had a dream and he narrated his dream to his father who immediately knew that Yusuf would be a prophet. His brothers were jealous and they decided to throw him in a well. They lied to their father and told him that a wolf had killed him. Yusuf was rescued and sold to a man in Egypt. Later, the man's wife tried to seduce Yusuf, but he resisted. The woman angered by his resistance accused Yusuf of wanting to harm her, and Yusuf was sent to prison.
In prison, Yusuf met two other men and interpreted one of the prisoner's dreams. The prisoner was later released and Yusuf asked the prisoner to mention his talent to the king. One day, the King had a dream, and the prisoner who had been released mentioned Yusuf to the King, and Yusuf interpreted the King's dream, which was about Egypt having a seven-year drought. To reward him, the King released from jail and also investigated his case. The woman who had tried to seduce Yusuf testified that he was innocent, and Yusuf was given authority in Egypt.
During the seven-year drought, Yusuf's brothers visited Egypt to get food for their family. Upon seeing his brothers, Yusuf recognized them though they did not recognize him. In his high position of authority, Yusuf requested that the next time they come, they bring their youngest brother Benjamin (Benyameen) with them. When the brothers returned with him, Yusuf revealed to him his real identity, and plotted a theft case where his youngest brother was found guilty of theft and was detained from his family Later, when the father and brothers came to Yusuf, he helped them and revealed his true identity, and asked them to come and live with him.
