India is days away from deciding its votes as polling begins on April 19. Amid intensifying election campaigns, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has drawn attention to religious sentiments.

In a recent rally at Jammu’s Udhampur, Modi accused INDIA bloc leaders Rahul Gandhi, Lalu Prasad Yadav and Tejashwi Yadav of “teasing” people by eating “mutton in Sawan” and “fish in Navratri”. But is religion a big poll plank in the current Lok Sabha elections?

On the Awadh-Amas Express to Bihar, Anmol Pritam spoke to people from Delhi, Bihar, West Bengal, Assam and other states about what would decide their votes – the non-veg factor, inflation, or unemployment.

Notably, a pre-poll survey by CSDS-Lokniti said unemployment is the biggest issue for voters, followed by inflation and development. Hindutva is a poll issue for only two percent of voters.

But what’s the mandate on the ground? How are people reacting to the ‘mutton in Sawan’ controversy?
