A stock Jeep Willys with 3,000 miles on the odometer and a Jeep Gladiator Rubicon take to the slippery trails of Kansas Rocks Recreation Park (KS Rocks). The Willys belongs to my friend's girlfriend, who wanted to see how it handles off-road. I've been wheeling at Kansas Rocks since 2010 and it's an outstanding proving ground. Recent rains and fall leaves meant the trails were often as slick as marbles in snot. We picked our battles and overall had a fun day with the park almost to ourselves. The Willys can benefit from lockers or more skinny pedal, depending on the driver's state of mind or concern for the Jeep. One thing that's apparent is that since my friend and I have wheeled together for a decade, we've built reciprocal and absolute trust with regard to spotting. Time and again I was reminded how capable a stock Jeep is. The traction control doesn't seem too intelligent, however. In all the Jeeps I've wheeled back to my '07 JKU X, above a certain wheel speed, the traction control merely alternates pumping the brakes on each side of the vehicle with disregard for which has more traction.
