Hey guys in this video we'll take a look at the Blue Flag Iris or Iris virginica by its Latin name. Blue Flag Iris is a common plant found in ornamental gardens and low lying swampland or marshlands. This plant is poisonous so knowing how to identify it is extremely important, especially considering it can look a lot like the common cattail. Besides its very distinct indigo colored 6 petaled flower, the leaves are another way to tell this poisonous plant apart from the common cattail. The grass like leaves of Blue Iris will fan out from the ground in a flat arrangement. Your common cattail leaves will emanate from an almost perfectly circular stalk. Iris will have 4 leaves in this fan like structure whereas cattail will vary in number. These two plants often grow in similar areas so it's easy to confuse the two unless you look closely.
