Taraweeh prayers are a distinctive feature of Ramadan. But where did the practice come from? Dr. Shabir Ally explains what Taraweeh prayers are. He says that they aren’t mentioned in the Quran. Reports about the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) indicate that he prayed a few nights in the mosque but then told people to pray in their homes. Dr. Shabir Ally suggests that the Prophet intended for these prayers to be voluntary and flexible (they could be done at home or in the mosque, and alone or in congregation). During COVID, he advises that Muslims pray night prayers at home.
