This brief video is fully focused on a rare dark blue BMW M1 E26 I recorded in action on the Bernina Pass, in Switzerland, during the 2021 Bernina Gran Turismo. This is an event born in 2014 with the aim of keep the memory of the legendary Bernina Pass hillclimb race of 1929 and 1930 alive. Participants can either register for the event in a competitive form or decide to participate in the regularity race, where the ranking is stipulated based on who manages to better respect the speed average set by organizers. And this BMW was obviously fielded in the regularity race.

The M1 was produced from 1978 to 1981 as a homologation special for sports car racing and it was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, taking inspiration from the 1972 BMW E25 Turbo concept car. The M1 is the first car to be solely developed by BMW M department and employs a 3.5-litre straight-6 engine linked to a 5-speed manual gearbox. On the road car it produces 273 hp at 6,500 rpm and 330 Nm of torque at 5,000 rpm. Only 453 production cars were built: 399 were road going units while the remaining ones 5were made for motorsport.

Watch and hear how one of these fully stock icons sounds like in action on the hillclimb course!
