This is the story of the companion Marthad Al-Ghanawi who had a girlfriend in Makkah before he accepted Islam, after he became a Muslim he was still so attached to her that he wanted permission from the Prophet to get married to her, the Messenger did not respond to him, however, Allah revealed an aayah in the Quran that clarified the matter.
