As Afghanistan's capital Kabul fell to the Taliban, chaos and terror erupted, as thousands of people made a desperate dash to flee the city, fearing retribution for aiding Western forces.

In the baking Afghan summer sun, thousands of people converged on the airport in Kabul. The Taliban's take-over of Kabul surprised the world; ‘No one thought it would be an absolute victory at this rapid a scale as it was, it was lightning speed’, says Obaidullah Baheer, a Kabul-based academic. 'Police officers took off their uniforms, ministers fled their ministries... for a period we had total anarchy and lawlessness', says Saad Mohseni, who founded Afghan news channel TOLOnews. As the Allies fled, people on the ground feared a new war. 'This was the most ridiculously outrageous screw-up that I've ever experienced’, says one Australian defence force analyst on the evacuation of Western forces and allies.
