Making It Difficult to Sin - Mufti Menk

Short Notes:

1. Improve your Clothing (Keep a Beard, wear loose clothes which are not attractive, put on hijab according to the sunnah and not that of fashion).

2. Salaah, pray on time (it saves from immorality and evil) and pray the extra Nafl and Sunnah prayers and give Zakaat and charity.

3. Voluntary Fasts (Monday and Thursday and 13th, 14th and 15th of every month).

4. Do more good deeds (remove harmful objects from the road, etc).

5. Keep your tongue moist in the remembrance of Allah.

- Istighfar. Astaghfirullah (I seek Allah's forgiveness). At least 100 times a day.

- Laa hawla walaa quwwata illa billah (There is no might or power except by Allah)

Abu Hurairah said:
“The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said to me: ‘Be frequent in saying: “There is no might or power except by Allah, (Lā ḥawla wa lā quwwata illā billāh).” For verily, it is a treasure from the treasures of Paradise.’” (Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3601)

- Ashhadu alla ilaha illallahu, wa ash-hadu anna muhammadan abduhu wa rasuluhu (I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah alone, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and His messenger).

- Subhan-Allahi wa bihamdihi, Subhan-Allahil-Adheem (Glory be to Allah and His is the praise, (and) Allah, the Greatest is free from imperfection).

Prophet, peace be upon him, said, "There are two phrases that are light on the tongue but heavy on the scale of rewards and are dear to (Allah) the Gracious One.


- Subhanallah wa bihamdihi 'adada khalqihi wa rida' nafsihi wa zinata 'arshihi wa midada kalimatihi

...Prophet, peace be upon him, said, "I recited four words three times after I left you and if these were to be weighed against what you have recited since morning these would outweigh them, and these words are: Subhanallah wa bihamdihi 'adada khalqihi wa rida' nafsihi wa zinata 'arshihi wa midada kalimatihi (hallowed be Allah and praise is due to Him to the extent of the number of His creation and to the extent of His pleasure and to the extent of the weight of His Throne and to the extent of ink used in recording words for His Praise). (Sahih Muslim Book 48, Hadith 106)

6. To maintain and remain in the condition of Wudhu at all times and try your best to sleep in the state of wudhu.

7. Stay with Good Company.

8. Try not to be alone.

9. Don't even come close to Zina. Close the door from distance. Everything has a beginning and the beginning stage of zina is the eyes. Stages of zina: Eye contact, approach to meet, exchange of numbers and contact details, becoming friends, illicit relationship (bf/gf) and all these leads to zina (adultery).
- Lower your Gaze.
- Brothers do not wear tight jeans and shirts that exposes the chest.
- Don't wear attractive and provocative clothes.
- Sisters don't put on perfume when you go out and don't keep fringes (i.e. Tabarruj).

10. Constantly make dua that Allah makes it difficult to sin.

- O Allah make loved to us Imaan believe in you and beautify it in our hearts and make detested for us/to us kufr (disbelief) and sin and transgression, make it hard for us, make it difficult for us, make it hated for us, create a barrier between us and that (sin). (This is also found in Dua Qunoot).

11. Ask Allah to protect us from shaitan. (Audho Billahi Minash shaitan nirrajim).

12. Preach. Call others to Islam (both Muslims and Non-Muslims).

13. Always Eat Halal and avoid doubtful stuff.

14. Speaking to elderly people and visiting them is also a means of protecting oneself from sin.
- Visiting the sick.
- Visiting the graveyard (Remembering death).

15. What we hear and what we see needs to be governed so that it protects us from further sin.
-Speak good.
-Stop listening to music.
-Govern yours eyes from looking at non-mahram and illicit stuff.

16. An-najaad (saviour from hellfire).
- Stay at home, go out for necessity.
- Cry over a sin, regret it.
- Cry from the fear of Allah.
