Major Gordon Corrigan, military historian and former professional soldier, is fascinated by military leadership. What makes a military commander not just competent – but great? He tells the story of Horatio Nelson. “A master of public relations, his victories were great – but he made them greater. He was a national hero when we badly needed one. But some also consider him a war criminal. To unravel the secret of Nelson’s success, Corrigan meets the Admiral’s great, great, great-granddaughter Anna Tribe and travels to the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich where Nelson’s papers are kept to talk to the curator Colin White. He tells the story of Nelson’s love affair with Emma Hamilton and how that led to a terrible lapse of judgement in Naples and, from the deck of the ‘victory’ recalls Nelson’s tactics and tragic death during the Battle of Trafalgar.
