Tesla is still a smaller company than Uber despite making twice as much revenue as the ride sharing company. Uber has a single main business in logistics and transport, which could easily be disrupted by self driving technology. Tesla is coming after this market segment and is bringing everything they've got.

Elon Musk has made it clear that Tesla will be feature complete for self driving by the end of this year, whereas Uber CEO claims anything with self driving is still 5 years away. Full self driving aside, Tesla still has rapidly growing markets to fall back on, whereas Uber is a one trick pony.
