Let’s talk intranasal vaccines for calves.

When it comes to calf health, we know the top two diseases in calves are pneumonia and diarrhea. As a veterinarian and producer, I want to make sure that we protect our calves from these diseases through good management practices and preventative measures like intranasal vaccines.

In the first two to six months of a calf’s life, maternal antibodies from colostrum are a critical component to calf immunity, however, when we’re vaccinating a calf with an injectable vaccine the immune response can be blocked by the maternal antibodies the calf received through the colostrum. Vaccination with an intranasal vaccine avoids the issue of maternal antibodies and stimulates local immunity at the mucosal surfaces in the nose to help protect the calf.

In this video we demonstrate vaccinating a calf with Bovilis® Nasalgen® 3-PMH, which is an intranasal vaccine effective in providing broad-spectrum respiratory protection against both viral and bacterial pathogens:
 IBR
 BRSV
 PI3
 Mannheimia haemolytica
 Pasteurella multocida

Vaccine programs are not one-size fits all and vaccine decisions should be made in conjunction with your veterinarian.
