How should we interpret the violence immediately following the Indonesian declaration of independence? How is attention given to this chaotic and violent period, both in Indonesia and the Netherlands? In light of Marjolein van Pagee's new book, Ady Setyawan, Fitria Jelyta, and Robin Raven discussed topics such as Bung Tomo, the term 'bersiap,' the place this period does or does not occupy in our histories, and the ways in which different countries handle the suffering from that time.
